Members Only Event
Introduction to the Universe - a monthly astronomy talk.
An additional night for members, second Wednesday of each month.
For Hamilton Astronomical Society members only.
Tonight (July 13th):
Life in the Solar System
Speaker: Hamilton Astronomical Society member Jonathan Park.
What is life?
Apart from Earth, are there other places in the Solar System where life could get started and survive?
What kind of life could survive in our Solar System?
The building blocks of life, including amino acids (which make up proteins), molecules required for DNA, for cells, and others, have been found in space and on meteorites, and appear to be spread throughout the Solar System. The first step for life to get started on other Solar System bodies is complete. This is great news in the search for life.
With a focus on Earth’s extremophiles (organisms which love extreme conditions), we look at Enceladus, Europa, Titan and Mars, to see what kinds of life could survive there, and think about how easy it would be for life to get started in these places.
We hope you can join us to learn more about this fascinating topic.
